Kelly Marie Tran Would Return to Play Rose Tico if “It’s the Right Story”

One of the hotly debated aspects of the new Star Wars trilogy was the character Rose Tico, played by Kelly Marie Tran. After appearing in a prominent role in The Last Jedi, the character was greatly diminished in The Rise of Skywalker. What’s more, Tran endured an unnecessary bit of hostility from certain members of the online community who rejected the character outright. Which is why it’s surprising to hear the actress say she would welcome a return to the role under the right circumstances.

When asked by Collider to share her thoughts on Crazy Rich Asians director Jon M. Chu’s comments about giving the Rose character her own series, Tran said, “He’s so cool. I don’t know. I honestly don’t know. It’s so strange. I had so much fun being in that world but I feel like the pieces would have to fall into a perfect little puzzle and everything would have to feel like it’s the right time and the right moment and the right story, like with any other project. But I don’t know.”

She went on to explain that Rose remains a character with a much larger story to tell. “Yeah, absolutely. Absolutely. I think there are a lot of characters in that universe that we have yet to hear enough about.”

In addition to directing, J.J. Abrams co-wrote the screenplay with Chris Terrio (ArgoJustice League). Kathleen Kennedy, Michelle Rejwan, and Abrams will produce, with Callum Greene and Jason McGatlin executive producing. Composer John Williams, who has scored every chapter in the Star Wars saga since 1977’s A New Hope, will return to a galaxy far, far away with Rise of Skywalker.
